Operation Desert Storm was fought with an unprecedented fusion of technology and strategy which was so destructive, and so brutal, it is known as Hyperwar. The strategy had two parts: the first goal is politico-military decapitation of the enemy including the assets that allowed the enemy to communicate with other military resources. If the attack was not completely successful, the new target was "all things that a country used to sustain itself". Another aspect was the digging of oil filled fire trenches and mine fields. Hyperwar can be depicted by these characteristics; surprise, intensity, lethality, decapitation, scope, and mass.
HYPERWAR: THE LEGACY OF DESERT STORM
Looking to the future of Hyperwar, it has the potential to become rapidly more destructive and intense. As more weapons are develop and technology continues to expand, it will not be as necessary to have precise targets and the execution of the tactic will be much quicker and easier. In the future, bombers will be able to drop precision weapons en masse and will not be required to designate a target with a laser or some other similar device. Future Hyperwar planners will be able to get rid of problems before they actually become problems creating an extremely dangerous future in warfare.
